Panda Love

Lu Lu the giant panda is working to build his species one baby at a time.

On April 2, Lu Lu was introduced to female panda Xi Mei as part of a breeding program at the Sichuan Giant Panda Research Center in China, reports the Huffington Post.

The two bears (shown in the video above) copulated for 18 minutes and three seconds, shattering the usual one minute and 20 second runtime for panda sex. Lu Lu's intimate time with Xi Mei actually broke the record for longest recorded panda sex session.

The record Lu Lu broke was his own. Shortly before being introduced to Xi Mei, the panda nicknamed "Eduring Brother" mated with Zhen Zhen for 7 minutes and 45 seconds.

Finding the right mate for a female panda is important since the animals are only fertile for a 36-hour window each year, according to PBS

After Lu Lu's two successful breeding sessions, the center is hopeful that baby pandas are on their way.
